What is SMS Backup+?
Automatically backup your SMS, MMS and call history with a separate label in Gmail and Google Calendar.
Later you can restore the saved data (except MMS) back to the phone, especially useful when switching to a new device.
IMAP access needs to be manually enabled in Gmail, see the website and FAQ for more information. You can of course use your own IMAP server for backups, giving you full control over your data.
SMS Backup+ is a free open-source project which has been in active development since the early days of Android, completely ad and tracking-free, supported through voluntary donations.

Used this app for many years. It still works perfectly fine as on 2020.09. What will it do? Sync your GSM sms to Gmail. Does it still work? Yes, 100%. You must follow the official steps from GitHub. Enable IMAP in gmail get the app code etc. Once done it will work as it used to before Google disabled the auth.

This was the only SMS that backs up to gmail. Not working at the moment.
I've been using this app for many years across probably 5 different phones and it's worked well on all of them. It's just a great app.
This app backup sms & mms to gmail labeled with as sms. This way you can search for information on gmail and get results from both email and sms. This works so well!!
UPDATE April 2014: Now on iPhone - so miss this app! Anyone knows of something that does this for iPhone?
So useful! Synchronizes (backup and restore fully functional) SMS & MMS in a Gmail label using threads. If you synchronize your contacts with Gmail too, SMS threads will looks like standard email threads.
