Segment is the analytics API you've always wanted. Instead of integrating with Google Analytics, Mixpanel, KISSmetrics, etc. individually, you integrate with a simple, clean API once and you can send your data to all of them.

That way you don't have to choose up front and waste integration time. Once you're setup, you can swap and add new analytics services with the click of a button. No need to touch any code!

does anybody have an idea how to classify segment.io? On one hand this is a tag manager tool similar to google tag manager and tealium, on the other hand it includes a analytics solution as well. Currently it lists all other analytics tools as alternatives but that is not really correct if you are looking for tag management services.
Segment is NOT a tag manager, it's a data integration tool / API.
Quote from the page segment.com
"Simple -Replace all your tags and tracking with one interface"
would count as a tag manager in my book.
at any rate, if it is a data integration tool, its not an alternative to google analytics either

It's not an alternative to ANY analytics tools, it's a way to simplify the use of more than one. It's absolutely NOT a tag manager, a tag manager applies different tags to different pages based on rules (who's watching, where they are coming from etc...).
