What is RenewHound?
RenewHound is a free, privacy-first web app for tracking every expiring document in a household — passports, driver's licenses, visas, insurance policies, and warranties — on a single visual timeline. Documents are grouped by family member with a status band that shifts from green to amber to red as each deadline approaches, so nothing quietly lapses.
Adding a passport can be done by photographing its photo page (or uploading an existing photo or PDF): RenewHound reads the expiry date, document number, and issuing country via MRZ (machine-readable zone) scanning with check-digit verification, entirely on-device — OCR runs in the browser, and unverified reads always fall back to manual entry. For other document types, per-country validity rules suggest an expiry date once an issue date is entered, and a one-tap "I renewed it" action rolls a document forward and archives its history.
RenewHound has no backend of its own: data is stored locally in the browser (IndexedDB) and, optionally, synced directly from the device to a folder in the user's own Google Drive using Google's restrictive drive.file scope — RenewHound's own servers never receive user data. It works offline as an installable Progressive Web App (PWA), can export .ics calendar reminders or push events straight to Google Calendar, and is available in English and Spanish.
It's a good fit for anyone who has missed a passport or license renewal before, or who tracks documents for multiple family members and wants one place to see what's coming up — an alternative to generic reminder/calendar apps or spreadsheets for this specific use case.
