Comment summary: Reddit users highlight the platform's vast and diverse range of communities and its effectiveness in offering niche content. However, issues like slow load times, excessive moderation, and controversial management practices such as API changes and censorship have been criticized. Many note Reddit's decline in fostering free speech, comparing it to its early days, and express concerns over privacy and user manipulation through shadowbans.

It used to be a platform for free speech, now like other social medias they have become a safe space so that they can stay advertiser friendly. If one of the founders of Reddit were still alive today, he would be disgraced by what it had become.

Reddit has banned many kinds of communities for "hate" speech, who knows what their definition of "hate" is. Recently they banned a community called /r/frenworld, a subreddit for memes of green frogs. They had broken no rules, they only had some drama with another subreddit called TopMindsOfReddit, where they branded them as nazis for using the green frog meme. It saddens me that today this is considered to be hateful.

Aaron Swartz would be rolling in his grave if he knew what the company he co-founded had become. Reddit was formerly a platform for free speech, now it is a safe space for leftists.

I Think reddit Is Trying To Clean Up Adult Things On Their Website, Cause They Saw Lots Of Adult Things In Their Website, And Their Being Banned By Some Countries, So They Do That?

Kris Regina

Um, the Subreddit “/r/frenworld” was literally posting Nazi apologia, gloried the NSDAP's leader Hitler, and most significantly did Holocaust denial/apologia.

Also, GTFO Nazi apologist.

The karma system is chaotic, people with 70k+ karma can go around and be a troll as much as they want and often these people are moderators who can just lock and remove posts if they dislike it. I think karma should reset after some time and everyone should start from 0.

It is almost impossible to have a meaningful conversation on Reddit as moderators with 70k karma simply lock you if they disagree. Down votes for no reason and without explanation can also ruin your karma to the point you are not allowed to post in certain communities.

For example my post was once removed from a vet subreddit because I was asking what dewormer to use. What is the point of the vet subreddit then?

I can recommend Reddit only if you have stupid questions about life, religion and sexuality or want to post d picks and ask if its big enough. If you would like to have any serious, meaningful conversations just avoid Reddit.

Pros:

  • You can often find news and knowledge there before anywhere else. However, this is the merit of its users and subreddit mods alone.
  • Subreddit mods generally keep it running in a quasi-civil manner. This deserves some level of appreciation, considering they aren't even paid for this job and they have Reddit Admins breathing on their necks constantly.

Cons:

  • As denounced by the others, Reddit Administration promotes user manipulation. However, not only through shadowbans. Be it stringing users or mods with aggressive controls and convenient loopholes, Reddit administration will only benefit their company. The point? This means you can see some, but not all companies in their platform. It is my suspicion that only big name companies and their major competitors are allowed in Reddit. If you are small, then you will be suffer dispensation without notice. Do not believe me blindly, though. Go and ask others.
  • Reddit Administration is unprofessional, doesn't give proper clarification about its rulings. Given that, there is no reason to believe they follow their own rulings at all. The platform belongs to them so it is their right, but it also means they have zero credibility as a social media or let alone a knowledge gate.

Even ignoring the huge political quagmire happening in this era, Reddit's current administration makes it unfit to be a space for public opinion.

Most of the content that you will see are bot upvoted posts and comments, mainly to push a political agenda. Sadly moderators and admins of the websites will ban you if you try to question or disagree how the subreddits are run.

Reddit is an echo chamber, run by people that love censorship and hate anyone having an actual critical argument.

I went to this site very open-minded after I saw a colleague I respect use it. I participated in various posts and engaged in different communities. Then, I started posting stuff myself. My first couple of posts got very little traction. My last one got flagged for reasons I never learned. It was a simple post about a technical issue I sincerely needed help with and I posted it on the most relevant community. There were even people responding to it. I never got to view the last few responses because it got taken down. I expect this kind of BS behavior from other sites or for scenarios of community rules violation but this was too much. I even blacklisted the site from both my browsers and my OS so that I never get tempted to visit it on my computer.

Reddit is great! Despite the endless reposts and bots, it’s a treasure trove of unique communities that you wouldn’t easily stumble upon elsewhere (maybe Discord comes close). However, come July 1, 2023, Reddit is changing its long-standing terms of service regarding APIs. This could potentially wipe out most, if not all, third-party apps, leaving users with no choice but to use the Reddit app on their phones or just walk away.

What is Reddit?

Reddit (stylized in its logo as reddit) is an American social news aggregation, web content rating, and discussion website. Registered members submit content to the site such as links, text posts, and images, which are then voted up or down by other members. Posts are organized by subject into user-created boards called "subreddits", which cover a variety of topics including news, science, movies, video games, music, books, fitness, food, and image-sharing. Submissions with more up-votes appear towards the top of their subreddit and, if they receive enough votes, ultimately on the site's front page. Despite strict rules prohibiting harassment, Reddit's administrators spend considerable resources on moderating the site.
