What is OpenWhen?

OpenWhen is the digital version of the paper "Open When" letters people make for long distance partners, best friends and kids leaving for college.

You write a letter for a specific moment, like "open when you miss me" or "open on our anniversary". You can lock it behind a question only they can answer, or a date it unlocks. Then you send one link by text, WhatsApp or email. On the other end they hold a finger on the wax seal to break it and read.

Letters are free and unlimited, up to 12,000 characters, and nobody needs an account. There's also a Note Jar that opens one note a day, a Group Jar that a whole team or family writes into for a farewell or birthday, and letters to your future self.

Optional one-time upgrades add a photo, a voice memo, any song, handwriting fonts and reveal effects. They cost $1.99 to $3.99 depending on country. No subscription.
