What is OpenMediaVault?
OpenMediaVault is the next generation network attached storage (NAS) solution based on Debian Linux. It contains services like SSH, (S)FTP, SMB/CIFS, DAAP media server, RSync, BitTorrent client and many more. Thanks to the modular design of the framework it can be enhanced via plugins.
OpenMediaVault is primarily designed to be used in home environments or small home offices, but is not limited to those scenarios. It is a simple and easy to use out-of-the-box solution that will allow everyone to install and administrate a Network Attached Storage without deeper knowledge.

D-side thinks XigmaNAS is an alternative to OpenMediaVault
D-side Upvoted a comment on TrueNAS as an alternative to OpenMediaVault
It's not a commercial product... so far as software is concerned - BUT and it's a big one, it needs some fairly beefy hardware to run on. OpenMediaVault is far from perfect (hence needs an alternative) but it runs on things like a Raspberry Pi 3. FreeNAS needs a big Intel machine, oooodles of RAM, RAID (ideally) and it goes on. Hardly a free solution if you factor in all the costs!RemovedUser added OpenMediaVault as alternative(s) to Amazon Drive
Clean, fast, stable and easy to use. Works perfect out of box.
Very versatile, lots of plugins but easy to use GUI.
Based on my favourite GNU/Linux distribution - Debian and lots of features all for free ... :)
The most systems are bad... the only two good ones are FreeNAS and OMV
But OMV is the only ARM one that is stable and works perfect!!
This is the only one that is running on my raspberry and bananapro....
Awesome project . I donated 10 bucks
I decided to try this OS out in a virtual machine on my "mainframe" (hypervisor, duh?) and it was nice, the test evolved into something sharp and production-like so I didn't uninstall it. It has been running as a VM for about a year or so, and I like it. I would rather run at on a dedicated box, but I am not gonna use NFS for network storage anymore. I am planning on using ceph instead, and surely, I don't need OMV to use NFS but it was there and it was easy to setup in the webGUI so I thought "why the hell not?" hehe.
But if you want a NAS that you build on your own, instead of buying a Synology or something, I can highly recommend this distro for you.
