A collection of tools known to actually work in environments with heavy censorship.
What is Obscura VPN?
Meet Obscura: the first VPN that can’t log your activity and outsmarts internet censorship.
VPNs know more about you than they should. So we made one that doesn’t. Even “no-log” VPNs can track you, since they see both who you are and what you do. Obscura is built such that we can’t see your traffic in the first place.
- Traditional VPNs see your identity and your browsing history.
- Obscura only sees your IP address and never your browsing history.
It’s simple: We can’t leak what we don’t have.
- Logs? Not possible: Obscura VPN doesn’t log your IP address and can’t see your internet traffic, ever. It’s impossible by design.
- Emails? Not necessary: Log in with just a randomized account number. No names, no emails, no phone numbers necessary.
- Credit card info? Not required: Easily pay using Bitcoin’s Lightning Network for better privacy, instant payments, and lower transaction fees.
Outsmart Internet restrictions
By blending in with regular internet traffic, Obscura avoids being detected by network filters – keeping your internet access unrestricted.
Private by design: Our two-party VPN protocol By using a fully-independent exit hop, Obscura keeps who you are and what you do separate.
- Obscura never sees your traffic: Obscura’s servers relay your connection to exit servers but can never decrypt your traffic. Your traffic is always end-to-end encrypted via WireGuard to the exit server.
- Exit hops never see who you are: Exit servers (run by
Mullvad ) connect you to the internet but never see your personal info. Obscura masks your real IP address when relaying to the exit server.

Comments and Reviews
Works great in censorship heavy environments. However, that may be due to the relatively new nature of the VPN. So far Obscura connects quickly with minimal speed impacts.
You're absolutely right that VPNs don't provide the same level of anonymity as a mixnet like Tor. Obscura VPN might advertise some unique features, but ultimately, with a VPN, we're still connecting to servers that our data passes through. Using Mullvad VPN directly could be a better option, as it's more well-known for privacy and security. However, for those who are looking for faster speeds and less anonymity, Obscura VPN could be a suitable choice
Tor isn't a mixnet but a darknet which can suffer from targeted attacks deanonymizing users traffic. A mixnet like
Nym for exemple goes much further and is way harder to attack. It's still slow to use so not worth for all usecase but bring stronger anonymity. Their VPN (which is still in beta) enable using the mixnet or a wireguard setup similar to Obscura but it is available on almost every OS while Obscura is only available on macOS.
The marketing on this is crazy. It's still a VPN we are far from the anonymity provided by a mixnet. I would rather use MullvadVPN directly than using someone else VPN to get to a Mullvad hop.
