Mike Thompson digs into Area of Operation I, Task B of the Instrument Pilot Airplane Airman Certification Standards. MockDPE uses live weather information from aviationweather.gov to increase realism of the mock checkrides.
Students practice interpreting METAR and TAF information from dynamically generated scenarios, just as the real DPE will expect on checkride day.

What is MockDPE?

MockDPE is an AI-powered FAA Instrument Rating checkride simulator that runs full IFR oral exams like a real Designated Pilot Examiner. Students can practice unlimited mock orals graded task-by-task against the FAA Airman Certification Standards (ACS), with every regulatory citation traced to official FAR, AIM, and Instrument Flying Handbook sources. Scenarios are built from live weather and over 16,000 US airports, making each session unique and realistic for checkride prep. MockDPE is internally measured to achieve 96.3% grading consistency across runs, and the system is also validated by independent instrument flight instructors. MockDPE is built by a flight instructor with hundreds of hours of checkride prep experience, and users have completed over 3,000 mock checkrides on the platform since its public release in May, 2026.
