Fond of testing out new phones? Fond of using LineageOS and other custom ROMs? Yes, me too! It can be just a pain to …
What is MessagEase?
MessagEase is an alternative, non-QWERTY keyboard for your iPhone and iPad.
Created based on years of scientific research in user interface, MessagEase is designed and optimized for use on a touchscreen device.
MessagEase is a patented, innovative design different from the antiquated QWERTY keyboard. If you believe that every keyboard must be QWERTY-like, then MessagEase is not what you are looking for.
But if you are open to new ideas and up for experiencing a completely new way of writing you will be pleasantly surprised at how well, how precisely, and how fast you can enter text with MessagEase. Our current champion’s speed is 87 WPM— that's 87 Words Per Minute! Most people don't type nearly that fast with ten fingers!
MessagEase essentially has 9 large keys with an optimized letter assignment to maximize your speed, increase your accuracy, and ease your writing. Since MessagEase is very different, you must spend a few minutes to get used to it. We have included several learning games to help you learn the new, innovative pattern of MessagEase—and you’ll save hours by texting and writing faster.
With MessagEase you enter letters and characters with either a tap, or a drag (slide): taps for the most common characters and directional drag for the rest. Please watch the video, or see the section Essential MessagEase, to learn more.
MessagEase's design is based on sound user-interface principles such as the Fitts' Law; it uses letter frequency and di-gram data to optimally place the characters on a keyboard with fewer, larger keys. That’s why the letter positions are non-QWERTY!

Comments and Reviews
I really like the app. I just spent 20 minutes typing in a detailed review only to be told at the end of the captcha verification failed and all of my careful crafting and editing was lost.
I'll try once more...
Ditto to many of the comments raised in the review from March 1st 2023. I also think it's very funny when a friend has to hand the phone back because they have no idea what to do.
If I recall correctly, messages has a training app disguised as a game. Found that very helpful to build the muscle memory and familiarity to become proficient quite quickly.
I have experienced a few minor problems and shortcomings. For some of the technical ones, I can't really be sure if the problem is from messages, from android, or from the two of them trying to work together.
Word prediction initially worked, but now it doesn't, even though the setting shows that it is still selected
The microphone Stomps responding and announces that the app doesn't have microphone permissions. upon checking microphone permissions, I can see that they are indeed granted. the annoying work around I use is to revoke the Privileges and then regrant them. then it will work again until the next time it happens.
Multiple choice voice recognition options also used to work great but I can't seem to get them showing again. This was one of the most attractive features to me that convinced me to try message ease. Much more often than not, one of the five interpretations of my voice would be 100% correct, And it is much quicker to scan and select the correct one than it is to go back and manually edit out the mistakes of a single option.
I wish I could find a rich community of users to ask questions of and share tips with one another. it just occurs to me now to check you too. I would enjoy videos of users who are especially proficient, as I would gladly begin adopting the best practices of others.
Their documentation is quite extensive, but they don't seem to have a search function, and it often takes me a long time to find what I'm looking for, because I don't always know/remember which section to look in.
There were and are so many keyboards, most of them look alike and follow the same old concept: Typewriter
sigh
Not this one! I wanted something that I could use with a single hand and also during a bumpy bis ride.
First day I was cursing! First week I almost gave up because I had a hard time configuring it. Second week cursing was gone. That was like 5 years ago :D
Srsly, do NOT expect a seamless experience a la happy happy joy joy but over time you get into it. And finally, typing single-handedly on a bumpy ride is quite the bonus. Over time you will be even pretty fast.
Above all, you can do so many things in the settings: different dictionaries, shortcuts like time stamps, re-arranging letters to your needs if some generic language setting does not suit you.
So much joy, eh?
Well, not really, there is one big bummer: You can export your keyboard but all the minute settings you will have done over time (shortcuts etc) will not be part of it :( Best solution if you switch phones: Walk through your settings and copy as many settings as you can grab (and you will still miss some). That really needs improvement!!!
PS: One more positive thing - if people tend to grab your phone to use it, they will quickly return it with disoriented look after seeing/trying to type and will never bother your phone again :D
