The Matroska Multimedia Container is an open standard free container format, a file format that can hold an unlimited number of video, audio, picture, or subtitle tracks in one file. It is intended to serve as a universal format for storing common multimedia content, like movies or TV shows.

Matroska is a free and open media container format with a huge and versatile feature-set.
It has many more features than the popular/prevalent mp4 format for example.
A Matroska file can have multiple video, audio, and subtitle streams, with differing metadata and flags for automated selection. Chapters allow you to jump to sections of a file. Matroska can split and include sections from different files - for example to store a series intro and outro only once instead of for each episode.
It is the most versatile media container that I am aware of & supports more media types than others such as MPEG4 & OGG.
