What is Letta?
Letta, formerly known as MemGPT, is a platform for building stateful AI agents with advanced, self-editing memory. Born from the MemGPT research project at UC Berkeley, it gives agents a virtual context that persists beyond a single conversation: agents decide what to store, rewrite their own memory blocks and keep learning across sessions. It is model-agnostic, works with OpenAI, Anthropic and local models, exposes agents through REST APIs and SDKs in Python and TypeScript, and ships a visual Agent Development Environment for inspecting exactly what an agent remembers. The core server is open source and can be self-hosted with Docker, while Letta Cloud offers a managed deployment.
