What is Kotoba?

Kotoba is an audio-first spaced-repetition app for Japanese vocabulary, designed to run entirely by voice. Tap Start once and the whole session happens by ear: new words are taught with a slow spoken breakdown and a native example sentence, review words are quizzed right before you'd forget them, and your spoken answers are graded by speech recognition, with "repeat", "skip", and "pause" as voice commands. Scheduling uses FSRS, the same modern algorithm recent versions of Anki use.

It covers the JLPT N5–N3 word lists, nearly 3,000 words with over 40,000 native-quality audio clips, and as words mature, prompts graduate from single words to fill-in-the-blank sentences. Kotoba is free, runs in the browser as a PWA (no app store), works offline once audio is cached, and keeps progress on your device with optional passwordless email sync. It was built for the hours other flashcard apps can't reach: driving, chores, and walks, over AirPods or car Bluetooth.
