kmap

kmap builds maps for Garmin handhelds, watches and cycling computers from OpenStreetMap data. Pick one or more regions, press Build and copy a single .img file to the device. The map has routing, address search, contour lines and hill shading.

Everything runs locally: no account, no server, no telemetry. kmap downloads the OSM extracts, elevation data and the tools it needs, prepares the data and compiles the map with mkgmap. It has a full-screen text interface and a command line with the same options.

Four open map styles ship with it (openstreetmap-carto, OpenTopoMap, CyclOSM, OSM Liberty Topo), each style can be edited down to single icon pixels, and profiles keep separate settings per device. kmap can also take the style (TYP file) out of a Garmin map you already have and apply it to new maps, where that map's licence allows it.
