What is Kensa?

Kensa is an open-source BDD testing framework for Kotlin and Java. Tests are written directly in code with a Given-When-Then DSL, so there are no feature files, no step definitions and no drift between the two. Kensa parses the test source at runtime and generates HTML reports and sequence diagrams that testers, analysts and product owners can read without opening the code.

It runs on JUnit 5, Kotest and TestNG, with Gradle and Maven plugins, an IntelliJ plugin and a TeamCity plugin. Apache-2.0 licensed.

Why is this a good alternative to Cucumber?

Same Given-When-Then structure and the same readable output for non-developers, without the Gherkin layer. Refactoring works because the tests are ordinary Kotlin or Java, and the report is generated from the code that ran rather than from a document maintained alongside it.
