HullCipher is a real-time mapping tool tracking movements and data of vessels on international sanctions lists. It compares the ship's details on these lists with the information currently broadcasted by the ship. The software accounts for contradictions between these lists and the ship's broadcasts.
HullCipher records every name, MMSI, and flag change from the ship's broadcast and flags numbers not on any list or a second transponder claiming the same IMO. It also notes when a listed ship stops broadcasting, the silence duration, and the status of nearby ships. It provides an hourly coverage map showing where the network can receive ship signals.
The software highlights visits to restricted ports and sea meetings between two ships, providing Sentinel satellite images when available. Users can replay tracks for a single ship or the entire fleet at a chosen moment. The software also allows users to track the ownership network published by authorities.
Users can set up alerts to monitor a ship and receive notifications for various events. A feature to save fleets by pasting a list of IMOs is also available.
For developers, HullCipher provides a read-only API with unique keys and signed webhooks. Any ship can be looked up by name, IMO, or MMSI. Case studies are available for further insights.
HullCipher is free to browse without an account. Free accounts offer extended history and email alerts, while paid plans provide full history and CSV export. The positions are sourced from terrestrial AIS, with history available from August 2026.
