What is Hotcell?

Hotcell runs isolated sandboxes for AI coding agents on hardware you already own: a Mac Mini on your desk, a cloud VM or a bare-metal box.

Each sandbox is a Docker container, a Firecracker microVM (Linux/KVM) or an Apple Virtualization microVM (macOS), all managed by one daemon and CLI. You can run as many sandboxes as the machine can hold, with live CPU, memory and cost per sandbox, and admission control that refuses to over-subscribe the host.

Your real API keys never enter a sandbox. Each sandbox gets its own token, and a gateway on the host swaps in the real key on the way out. Usage is metered, spend-capped and revocable per sandbox. Optional default-deny egress limits sandboxes to the gateway and an allowlist of package registries.

Install with npm i -g hotcell. Open source under Apache-2.0, with a Python SDK. Part of Directionally Local, alongside the Autopilot coding agent.
