I’ve followed HOOKED since its original chat-fiction era, and the value of the format was immediate: it made fiction easy to sample in a few minutes. The message-by-message delivery worked especially well for thrillers and romance because every tap could create a small cliffhanger. It was a good bridge between reading and more performed forms of storytelling.

Today, HOOKED offers a wider mix of web novels, audiobooks, anime-style webcomics and short video. That variety may suit people who want quick, serialized entertainment in one place, but it also makes the app’s identity less clear. Readers looking for meaningful choices will get more agency from dedicated interactive-fiction apps, while listeners looking for immersive, full-cast audio may find stronger voice performance and sound design on audio-first platforms. Short-drama apps also deliver the same rapid cliffhangers with more visual immediacy.

What still interests me is HOOKED’s potential as a story-discovery platform. Short text episodes are a low-friction way to discover premises and characters before they grow into audio or video. But for that to create lasting value, the app should make authors easier to identify and follow, preserve its earlier chat-fiction catalog, and help listeners and readers move between formats around the same story.

My take: worth trying if you like bite-sized suspense, romance and quick serialized stories, especially if you enjoy switching between text and audio. It is less compelling if you want deep interaction, consistently cinematic audio production, or a strong creator-following experience.
