What is Hive Pal?
Hive Pal is an open-source (MIT licensed) beekeeping management application that helps hobbyist and professional beekeepers keep their colonies healthy, productive, and well-documented through every season. It's voice-first: instead of typing at the hive, you tap record on your phone, talk through what you see on each frame, and the app handles the rest. Recordings upload straight into the inspection (even if you lose signal mid-yard), get transcribed via Whisper-powered speech-to-text, and a local LLM drafts structured notes - extracting queen sightings, brood patterns, treatments, and observations into a pre-filled inspection you just review and save. The AI stack runs on open-source models (faster-whisper + Ollama) and can be self-hosted alongside your data or run as a pull worker on your own machine, so no third-party cloud is required. Beyond voice inspections, Hive Pal is built around four core pillars: apiary management (track multiple apiaries with location info, weather data, and site notes), hive inspections (scheduled and recorded with customizable checklists, photos, and health assessments), queen tracking (performance, breeding records, and replacement schedules), and harvest management (honey production, processing dates, and yields across seasons and locations). It also offers free browser-based tools that need no signup, including a sugar syrup calculator, a brood development timeline, and a Demaree swarm-management workflow planner.
