Hiroba

Hiroba is a featherweight virtual office for remote teams. Each organization gets one 2D floor with a shared lobby and small team rooms. You show up by dropping your avatar on the floor, and a persistent roster shows who is here, away, on a call, or in do-not-disturb at a glance. Conversations start the way they do in a real office. In the lobby, voice fades in as you walk your avatar closer to someone (proximity audio). Team rooms of around five people work like an always-on group call you can hop in and out of via tabs. You can also page anyone with one click for an instant 1:1 voice chat across spaces, with DND respected. Hiroba is deliberately minimal: presence, atmosphere, and voice only. There are no video meetings, screen sharing, or recording by design, so you keep your existing meeting tool for those. Voice goes peer-to-peer over WebRTC and never touches the server, which only relays position and presence. Combined with a Tauri-based desktop client (not Electron), this keeps idle CPU near zero and memory usage small enough to leave the app running all day. The client and server are open source under Apache-2.0 and can be fully self-hosted. Desktop apps are available for macOS (Apple Silicon and Intel), Windows, and Linux. A hosted plan is also available for teams that don't want to run their own server.
