Apps similar to Handy Shortcuts include Desk Drive, which is free and open source. Other options are TweakNow DriveShortcut. Between them they cover Windows.
Desk Drive automatically adds a desktop icon pointing to the drive when inserting a media. So you can explore it right from the desktop. If you remove the media (USB /DVD) the shortcut goes away from the desktop.

On Mac or Ubuntu, every time you plug an external HDD/NAS/DVD/CD/USB stick into your computer, an icon that represents the newly connected item is added to the desktop, and removed when it disconnects. DriveShortcut brings this feature to Windows.
