Hakawati is a free, open-source AI text adventure game for Windows, macOS, and Linux. Players pick a world and a character, and an AI narrator tells a story that responds to their actions, dialogue, and directions.
There are two modes: Story Teller for freeform storytelling, and Game Master, where the AI also tracks the character's stats and inventory. Story cards help the AI remember important characters, places, and items over a long tale. Scenarios can be written, published to a public catalog, and started from there.
Hakawati doesn't include an AI model. Players can use their ChatGPT plan by signing in with ChatGPT, use an API key from providers such as OpenRouter, OpenAI, or NanoGPT, or run a model locally with Ollama, LM Studio, or another OpenAI-compatible server. Tales are saved on the player's computer, with optional sync across devices through a Hakawati account. The app is available in English and Arabic.
