What is gsimplecal?
gsimplecal is a lightweight calendar application written in C++ using GTK2. It was intentionally made for use with tint2 panel in the openbox environment to be launched upon clock click, but of course it will work without it.

Said about gsimplecal as an alternative
Because it doesn't depend on a full desktop environment (Gnome, KDE, Xfce, etc.), and I can use it with a lightweight window manager (JWM+Xcompmgr) and activate it with a simple mouse click (in my case, on the extreme right of a top "panel").
