Apps similar to go-mapi include Affixa, which is free for personal use. Other options are GmailDefaultMaker, TVHGoogleMapi and EasyMail for Gmail. In total there are four apps like go-mapi for Windows.
Affixa makes your webmail account part of Windows. Affixa makes gathering and preparing the files you want to send easy. Affixa gives you the choice of which web or desktop mail system you use and when.
Gmail as the default mailto: client. Yahoo, AOL, and Hotmail are now also supported. The Gmail compose message webpage opens with the To: box filled in automatically instead of a desktop client like Outlook, Windows Live Mail, or Thunderbird.
When you move to gmail or google apps you can no longer use the build in 'send to mail recipient as attachment' menu option of MS Office and other windows applications without installing a local mail client.
EasyMail is automatically loading the Google Mail website. It allows you to use the Google Mail service in a standalone app. So you don't need to have your web browser constantly open.
