A great alternative for those of us who want to steer clear of Google. I use Fruux to sync all my calendars and contacts to my phone using DavDroid, and it works amazingly well!
Mostly Error 500 at their website. Stuff doesn't work to create an account nor send eMail activations. Can't even contact them through the website. Rotting meat...
i was happy for years with paid fruux pro; syncing a dozen calendars spread over linux/thunderbird, android, apple. simple setup and german based privacy. BUT now the android app disappeared from the play store. since the non-presence of the fruux team was a little bit fishy all the time, i suggest not to spend time in a dying solution

Offers a free cloud to store data such as calendar and contacts, and using open standards such as CardDAV and CalDAV.
CalDav calendars work relatively reliably with fruux but CardDav won't sync with either Apple Contacts nor BusyContacts:
"UPDATE: As of July 2020, Fruux servers have introduced a bug where it would either return malformed responses to requests or would fail to process requests of a certain size. This bug has not been fixed (last checked Jan 2022) and affects everyone. Fruux customer care has not responded to complaints. Unfortunately we would not recommend using Fruux. Instead please explore many of the other popular services out there: iCloud / Google / Fastmail and so on."
I'm still looking for a CardDav solution as NextCloud is no present either. No, I don't want to have my contacts and/or calendar stored with Google.

with davx (davdroid) on handhelds fruux works well - other providers make it harder to collaborate on shared calendars. fruux is an easy sign-up
