yes, it IS needed to be installed before using. But after all it is just 2,2 MB and it's free and fast way of virus scan - http://www.esetnod32.in/download/online. I've checked several of so called "online" virus scans - Kaspersky, Norton, ESET - they all seem to be not so online, you have to install something before....unfortunetely
