What is Driveinary?

Driveinary is an open-source media gateway and image delivery network built with Next.js and the Google Drive API. It allows developers, bloggers, and creators to use their personal or organizational Google Drive account as the storage backend for websites and applications, avoiding the recurring costs of dedicated third-party media hosting services.

The platform operates on a Bring-Your-Own-Storage (BYOS) model. Uploaded assets are stored directly inside a designated "Driveinary_Media" directory within the user's personal Google Drive. Driveinary acts as a stateless proxy layer that generates clean public URLs, provides API key access, and performs real-time image transformations before serving content through edge caching networks.

Key Capabilities:

  • On-the-Fly Image Transformation: Dynamically resize, crop, and convert image formats (JPEG, PNG, WebP, AVIF) by appending simple query parameters to the media URL (e.g., ?w=500&format=webp). Image processing is handled server-side using libvips (sharp).
  • Direct Resumable Uploads: Supports direct-to-drive resumable upload sessions. Client browsers transfer files directly to Google Drive servers, bypassing serverless function payload limits (such as Vercel's 4.5 MB request body restriction) and enabling transfers of large assets including high-resolution video and audio.
  • Two-Way Google Drive Synchronization: Users can organize files directly inside Google Drive or through desktop sync clients. Creating subdirectories within the Driveinary folder automatically maps them to categorized folders in the web dashboard via the background sync scanner.
  • Security and Access Management: Media uploads and queries are authenticated using hashed API keys with domain-origin whitelisting. OAuth refresh tokens are encrypted at rest using AES-256-GCM. Drive permissions are restricted strictly to files created by the application using the scoped drive.file permission.
  • Multi-Format Media Delivery: In addition to images, Driveinary streams audio and video formats directly with support for byte-range requests, along with a minimalist web media explorer and interactive audio player.

Scope and Compatibility: Driveinary is designed specifically as a web media delivery and dynamic image optimization gateway, similar in function to Cloudinary and ImageKit. It communicates through standard HTTP REST endpoints and JSON payloads; it does not implement the AWS S3 protocol or signature specifications.
