Comments and Reviews
There is a lot to like about this software. It is a lightweight and very inexpensive personal document/file management and tagging system. The concept is that you import files/folders into DocuCan and place them in "cabinets" instead of "folders", then tag the file(s). You may either "autotag" or manually tag the files, and there is no limit to the number of tags any file may have.
In theory, you should be able to find your file every time by using the search function within Docucan. The tags also follow the files, so if you move a folder, then the tags go along as well, saving having to retag every file. Also, once you have set some tags, then DocuCan is able to suggest possible tags for files added later.
The functionality of the different screens is mostly easy to understand. For example, it is simple to change a file title such as "2110202.jpg" into "Baby Emma's first smile", there is a good-sized "notes" input box - where you can expand on what the file contains - and selecting/adding tags is very straightforward. If you are viewing a file in the right-hand pane however, it isn't immediately obvious how to get back to the thumbnail view. _ (You have to click on the "X" icon on the top left - this worried me at first, because "X" is usually reserved for the "delete file" option!)_
DocuCan reminds me of a lite version of "FileCenter", but DocuCan is much less expensive and for that reason alone I happily recommend it. My only reservation(s) are:
(a) Files imported to DocuCan's cabinet(s) also remain in their original Windows folder(s) so if you choose to keep both, you will be doubling the amount of disk space you use. Hence, my 4-star rating.
(b) Windows seems unable to find files stored within DocuCan. The fabulous DocFetcher is your best friend here - it **will **find the same file stored in DocuCan cabinets **and **within Windows folders.
