I have used Cloudways for about 8 months for a single Wordpress/woocommerce website on Digital Ocean. I know they support other software and platforms, but this is my experience.
I like Digital Ocean and still use it for websites. D.O. documentation is superb. But for a Wordpress site, I want something simple to setup. I am not going to be messing with the server. I like how Cloudways has pre-configured a high-performance architecture ready to go for a Wordpress install. There are also automatic backups. The site admin panel is simple. There is also customer support although I only used it one time.
I could build an identical system on Digital Ocean but there are a lot of steps using the linux command line (over 100 steps?) to install/configure Ubuntu, mysql, apache, nginx, varnish, etc. And sometimes it does not go so smoothly. And I never know how optimized it is. I am not a server expert. Cloudways has it all setup and tuned. Oh, and they also keep the D.O. server software updated.
Just terrible in new customer onboarding!
I've heard about the Cloudways hype and I'd decided to get off the "VPS server management" burden. So I went to Cloudways website and signed up for a free trial account. Then it redirected me to a live chat windows to submit some info before they sign me up. The chat agent's name was Rafat, who told me to wait for a minute before they send me an activation link by email.
Nothing happened in one hour!
I reached the live support again. This time an agent named Asher answered my request. After submitting registration information (again), he kept silent and left the chat window without saying goodbye. And there was no activation link, of course.
This must be the worst experience I've had so far and I think no one should be treated like the way Cloudways did to me.

Unfortunately the root lock-out is for our needs a critial blocker. Therefor atomic deployments on Cloudways servers fail. The support from Cloudways admitted that certain functions aren't available yet.
