What is Can I Plug In Solar?

Several US states have legalized plug-in (balcony) solar: small kits of up to about 1,200 W that plug into a regular outlet. Can I Plug In Solar answers two questions for a specific address.

Is it legal there? Each state's law is read from the statute and dated, with its effective date, size cap, landlord and HOA rules, and whether you need to tell your utility. Laws that are signed but not yet in force are shown as such.

Will it pay off? An hourly NREL PVWatts model for the panels' real direction, tilt and mounting (balcony railing, patio, fence or flat roof), priced at the local utility's rate from the OpenEI rate database. The new laws exclude these kits from net metering, so it also shows how much of the output your home would actually use and how much would go to the grid for nothing.

Optional: add a Green Button smart-meter file, which is read in your browser and never uploaded. Free, no sign-up, nothing for sale.
