Comments and Reviews
Absolutely amazing, feels minimalist yet is fully featured, from simple text chat up to image generation, simple, and just works.
Easy to install and use. Stronger privacy and security with local AI. Libre Source. Confusing name.
Strength: • Jeffser Alpaca works with most Linux distributions. Thanks to Flathub at https://flathub.org/apps/com.jeffser.Alpaca • Support MacOS at https://github.com/Jeffser/Alpaca?tab=readme-ov-file#macos • Libre Source (Open Source). If you are not familiar with "Libre Source", it means this software has both stronger security & stronger privacy. Because its code is publicly available for review and contributions at https://github.com/Jeffser/Alpaca • Attractive GNU General Public License version 3. This means the software code is owned and supported by a friendly not-for-profit community. Instead of a for-profit corporation. https://github.com/Jeffser/Alpaca#GPL-3.0-1-ov-file • Large amount of free models to choose from. Either one click install or manual installation. All models from: ___• https://ollama.com/search ___• https://huggingface.co/models ___• Install your own model from anywhere. Such as, but not limited to: ______• IEleuther.AI (GPT-Neo, GPT-NeoX, GPT-J, Pile), Qwen, DeepSeek, Falcon, ChatGPT, or Gemini • Recognition of image, plain text documents, PDF, YouTube transcripts, website. All of the above assuming you use compatible model(s). ___• For files, using any chat window you simply click on the bottom left small attach button ___• For websites, you simply ask questions about a certain website by pasting its URL • Local only or connect to the cloud ___• Local only means that after installing a model(s). If you turn off the internet/cloud access Jeffser Alpaca still works for anything local. Such as documents or chats. It does not send anything to total strangers. • Generation of texts or images • Multilingual interface. List at https://github.com/Jeffser/Alpaca?tab=readme-ov-file#translators • Talk to multiple models in the same conversation • Pull and delete models from the app • Have multiple conversations • Import and export chats • Code highlighting • Powered by https://ollama.com instance • Dark theme
Challenge: • Confusing name. Because the word "Alpaca" is already used by a large number of other apps. The challenge is that when user search for Jeffser Alpaca, it is very high risk that they will find another App which also use the name "Alpaca". Then be disappointed. To resolve this challenge how about adapting the name? From "Alpaca" to anything unique to the author liking. How about "Alpako" or "Jeffser-Alpaca" or "Jefpaca" or "Alpaser"? Or a unique word in Esperanto at https://translate.yandex.com/en/translator/English-Esperanto • Easy to use. But there is room for improvement. Some frequently use features are hard to find. But after this initial learning curve it is easy to use. This app was created in 2024. Which is roughly 1 years ago. It's going to get easier and easier to use. Anyhow, Jeffser Alpaca is Libre Source (Open Source) you could contribute any suggested improvement.
