The app updates the host file periodically but doesn't need to run in the background in order to block ads, which is especially convenient for older phones.

The usage is very simple, and it supports both IPv4 and IPv6.

Very good! I have been for years (I mean it really) looking for a similar (or almost equal) application to what was at the time blokada 5. So I was a long time eating a thousand and an ads, until I found adaway that's exactly the same and I could even say that better, simpler and minimalist miche 💯

Got root? Then this is your weapon of choice!

Install and live happily ever after.

In all the years this served me well without hickups or bickering. So well that I eventually put them on my donation list.

What is AdAway?

An ad blocker that uses the hosts file. The hosts file contains a list of mappings between hostnames and IP addresses. When an app requests an ad, that request is directed to 127.0.0.1 which does nothing. There are options to run a web server to respond to blocked hostnames and to direct requests to the IP address of your choosing. You can automatically download hosts files from the app but it is possible to use your own and to add certain sites to the white- and black-lists.
