Shattered Pixel Dungeon unleashes its most ambitious update yet with massive new quest
Shattered Pixel Dungeon, the beloved open source roguelike game, has officially released version 4.0, marking what developers describe as the project's largest update to date. Launched on September 9th, 2026, some 281 days after the previous major release, the update centers on a completely revamped City Quest that sees players undertaking the ambitious Imp's challenge to raid an ancient dwarven vault. The new quest sub-region is approximately the size of three dungeon floors and features over 20 unique room types, three new static hazards, and fresh enemy variants drawn from the game's prisons and city zones. Players should note that gear cannot be taken out of the quest, raising the stakes for this self-contained adventure.
Beyond the headline quest, v4.0 introduces substantial visual and mechanical refinements across the game. The update brings six new enchantments and curses for weapons, including returning favorites like Venomous and Vorpal, along with enhanced dungeon artwork that adds shadowing where walls meet floors and introduces carpet tiles to the dwarven city environment. UI improvements include a revamped changes screen organized by major version with historically accurate icons, plus quality-of-life additions such as health bars that visually darken to indicate cumulative damage. Developer Aleksandar Komitov contributed extensive environmental improvements while maintaining the game's signature pixel-art aesthetic, signaling continued investment in the title nearly a decade after the original Pixel Dungeon's debut.
