Stripe will reportedly acquire AI model router OpenRouter in deal exceeding $7 billion

Stripe has reportedly finalized an agreement to acquire [OpenRouter], according to a report from Bloomberg, with sources indicating a deal price above $7 billion. This development follows a recent report by The Wall Street Journal that detailed ongoing acquisition talks between the two companies.

OpenRouter is a platform that enables customers to select from a wide selection of AI models from OpenAI, Anthropic, Google, and more, allowing users to match solutions to their specific needs and budgets. Earlier this year, OpenRouter announced a $113 million Series B funding round that raised its reported valuation to $1.3 billion.

While discussing the company’s approach in May, OpenRouter CEO Alex Atallah likened the startup to Stripe for AI, describing it as a single interface for accessing multiple systems and reducing the risk of vendor lock-in. The company also claimed a global user base of 8 million and provides access to more than 400 AI models.

Despite these details, Stripe has not issued an official confirmation of the acquisition at this time.

OpenRouter is good without Stripe, imo i wonder if i'll consider it if purchase ever took place.

$7B for 8M users is decent in the AI bubble world. And totally out of reality outside it. In comparison, Stripe wants to buy PayPal ($5B of net income) for only $53B.

But OpenRouter is "kinda" the Stripe of AI, a nicely thought API around a complex set of rules and an ever changing technology. This has made Stripe successful (mostly when people where exclusively paying with credit cards on internet), because all others frameworks (including PayPal) were terribly outdated.

That's not the case of AI, dozen if not hundred API already exist, and AI bots are already very capable to generate the code to switch from one provider to another.
