Node-RED 5.0 launches with major editor redesign, dark theme, and functional enhancements
Node-RED 5.0 arrives as the largest update in the history of this flow-based development tool, introducing a completely redesigned editor for improved information flow and workspace efficiency. Users can now display two panels by splitting the sidebar vertically and rearrange them by dragging, supporting more flexible layouts. Following this overhaul, the former info sidebar has been replaced with distinct explorer and information panels, making navigation and selection details more accessible.
With this version, Node-RED natively supports a dark theme that follows browser or operating system preferences. A new system for theme plugins allows for multiple theme variants, while accessibility improvements highlight selected nodes with a blue halo and standardize pan and zoom controls. For documentation, nodes with extra details show a badge in the workspace, enabling users to open a pop-up for quick reference. In addition, the built-in Markdown editor now supports GitHub-style alerts.
Other workflow changes include search navigation that appears in a popover, description tooltips for palette categories, and the ability to pause the debug sidebar with a toggle. Link nodes can be called from function nodes with response handling, and frequently used nodes list selectable targets in their dialogs. The delay node adds burst mode for rate-limiting. This release also addresses security with core updates.
