Zorin OS 18.1 improves Windows app support, enhances window tiling & updates Lite edition

Six months after the launch of Zorin OS 18, the team behind this popular Linux distribution has released Zorin OS 18.1, bringing notable enhancements aimed at both new and existing users. The built-in Windows app detection feature now recognizes over 240 installer files, a 40% increase from the previous release. When users attempt to run Windows installers such as Plex, the system presents tailored recommendations for native Linux versions or suggests suitable alternatives, making migration easier for those coming from Windows.

This update adopts the Linux kernel 6.17, aligning with Ubuntu 25.10, to offer better hardware compatibility and system performance. Users can also expect faster response times and a smoother desktop experience due to various bug fixes and performance enhancements implemented throughout the environment.

Building on these improvements, advanced window tiling gains new functions: layouts can be reordered in settings, edge tiling now supports snapping to custom layouts, and switching to a tiled app from the taskbar brings all relevant windows to the foreground. Panel functionality expands with support for right-to-left scripts such as Arabic, Hebrew, and Urdu, while certain apps may now place their own icon in the panel tray for quick access.

The release includes LibreOffice 26.2 and updated pre-installed applications. In parallel, Zorin OS 18.1 Lite debuts with Xfce 4.20, a refreshed file manager, and fingerprint reader support to better serve users on older or resource-constrained devices.

every time I tried to install ZorinOS I always encountered a glitch or error or something that just was annoying like a lack of feature... that's why today I'm on CachyOS and I'm amazed at how much better this distro is, it is fast and stable, it is Windows-like in appearance (at least with desktops like KDE etc), it has modern features, and its easy to find and install whatever you wish, I can also enjoy my games like The Finals without having to dual boot into Windows!

To me its clear that ZorinOS is the Linux for the average Windows user, while it might not be the best at everything it provide a very solid experience for anyone wanting to ditch Windows with familiar UX while having a different modern UI. It's clearly something easy to recommand to most people as their first Linux distibution.

nah, ZorinOS, Linux Mint and other similar are way behind in terms of feature support... these guys have forked from Gnome with the idea of doing their own thing but now they are behind at everything: no Wayland support, no HDR, no proper scalling etc...
