Tails 7.7 adds Secure Boot certificate alerts, improves root folder security, and more

Tails 7.7 focuses on enhancing security and user awareness for this portable Linux-based operating system. The update now notifies users if their computer is running with outdated Secure Boot certificates, addressing a concern as Microsoft phases out certificates issued in 2011, which will start expiring in June 2026. This new alert helps users avoid potential boot issues and maintain system integrity.

Building on these security improvements, Tails restricts access to the /root directory so it is only readable by the root user. This change eliminates a previous vulnerability where unauthorized users could view sensitive files in that folder.

Following the system-level enhancements, bundled software receives updates with Tor Browser upgraded to version 15.0.10 and Thunderbird to 140.9.1, providing users with recent fixes and enhancements.

These changes are designed for an easier transition as well. Automatic upgrades to version 7.7 are available from Tails 7.0 or newer, simplifying maintenance for existing users.
