Microsoft has terminated developer accounts of VeraCrypt, WireGuard & Windscribe software
VeraCrypt, the open-source encryption tool, faces a major obstacle after Microsoft terminated the developer’s account used to sign its Windows drivers and bootloader. The action came without prior warning or explanation, and Microsoft’s communications to Mounir Idrassi indicated that no appeal was possible. This move prevents the release of any updated Windows builds, directly impacting the majority of VeraCrypt users reliant on the operating system.
While Linux and macOS updates remain possible, the inability to deliver Windows releases represents a major setback for the project’s user base. The termination also has repercussions for Idrassi’s broader work responsibilities and daily job, reflecting its impact beyond the VeraCrypt project alone.
Other developers in the open-source security community, including those behind WireGuard and Windscribe, have reportedly encountered similar Microsoft account terminations, suggesting a wider issue affecting the sector.
Following the initial fallout, Microsoft Vice President Scott Hanselman intervened, reaching out publicly and privately to help resolve the situation. Hanselman has connected Idrassi with relevant Microsoft teams in an effort to restore account access and resume VeraCrypt Windows updates. Hanselman further said that the account terminations were due to a verification email that was ignored (not received?) by the concerned developers, leading to this issue.
