Google starts rolling out Android developer verification & new sideloading rules worldwide
Google is rolling out Android developer verification requirements across both the new Android Developer Console and Play Console. This change allows developers to complete verification and register their apps before user-facing changes begin later this year. While these verification tools are now being introduced, the experience for users downloading apps will remain unchanged until protections are activated.
User-side app installation protections will launch in September for Brazil, Indonesia, Singapore, and Thailand, with global expansion planned for 2027. Initially, the user experience will not be affected for most, except when attempting to install apps from unregistered developers. In those cases, users will need to use Android Debug Bridge (ADB) or advanced procedures, maintaining flexibility for experienced users. This exception was added following earlier user backlash, and Google has introduced a 24-hour waiting period for sideloading unverified apps.
To support the transition, app developers will now see their app registration status when generating signed App Bundles or APKs in Android Studio. Developers who have already completed Play Console’s verification steps will have eligible apps registered automatically. Additionally, registration status per app will be visible within the Play Console’s verification dashboard.
