3D software Blender 5.1 refines key workflows, boosts performance & expands geometry nodes
Blender 5.1 is now available, marking the latest update to the open source 3D creation suite. This release centers on refinement across the pipeline, balancing feature additions with bug fixes to enhance stability and efficiency for its wide user base.
Among key workflow improvements, Grease Pencil introduces a fill system that supports holes, while both curves and text benefit from a more intelligent rendering algorithm. In parallel, rendering, animation, and the viewport receive considerable performance upgrades, making interactions smoother and more responsive.
Following these visual enhancements, geometry nodes gain new capabilities, particularly with volume support and improved string handling, significantly aiding technical artists. The shading system is also extended by a Raycast node targeted at non-photorealistic rendering scenarios.
Building on this, the compositing, video sequencer, modeling, and snapping tools undergo several refinements. These updates are accompanied by hundreds of bug fixes and optimizations that make Blender 5.1 faster and more reliable for production work.
Finally, to improve future compatibility, many of Blender's core libraries have been updated to meet the VFX Platform 2026 specification, most notably advancing Python scripting support to version 3.13.

Blender is one of the most impressive digital common on earth, an industry-leading Free Software that compete directly with expensive proprietary solutions. It has improved a lot to become where it is but damn this makes me smile to know that some school and businesses are using it not only because it's Free of charges but because it has awesome features, extensive documentation, unlimited tutorials and great community support while being competitive with other more specialized solution. It's professionnal grade software (whatever that means)!
