Discord is now delaying its global age verification plans after huge backlash
If you're not already tired of listening about the Discord drama, you're in luck, because the platform has now officially announced that it is delaying its global age verification plan. Discord now says the rollout will not happen until the second half of 2026, after huge backlash over privacy concerns and confusion, admitting it did a poor job explaining the policy and left many users thinking face scans and ID uploads would be required just to use Discord. It is worth noting though that Discord is not backing out, and it still intends to roll out the change globally once the updated approach is ready.
Until then, age verification will remain limited to places where it is legally required, including the UK and Australia, with Brazil expected to join soon. In those regions, adults who want to access age restricted content will still need to verify through third party providers such as k-ID.
Discord says facial age estimation partners will need to run fully on device, with no biometric processing in the cloud, and it points to moving away from Persona, a Peter Thiel backed company tied to Palantir interest, after a UK test raised concerns about surveillance and security. It also says it stopped working with a previous vendor tied to a breach involving scanned IDs. Next, Discord plans to add more verification methods, including credit card checks, though it says local laws in the UK, Australia, and Brazil may limit what options are available. It also plans to add spoiler channels as an alternative to age gated channels, and to publish vendor documentation, technical details on age estimation, and ongoing transparency metrics about verification prompts and methods.

it disturbers me how easily some services/companies/teams can reassure their users everything's okay when it's not. just tone down a horrible decision a bit - and people won't complain as much. T_T
