Astro 7.4 has arrived with build performance insights, parallel prerendering, and more

Astro has released version 7.4, introducing performance monitoring tools and experimental features aimed at optimizing build times for developers working on larger-scale sites. The headline addition is a new --timings flag for the astro build command, which provides visibility into exactly where build processes consume time, whether it's a Vite plugin, image processing, syntax highlighting, or specific heavy pages. This diagnostic capability addresses a common pain point for developers trying to identify and resolve build bottlenecks without guesswork.

Beyond performance diagnostics, the release introduces several practical improvements. Developers can now configure separate image services for prerendered versus on-demand pages, add a notFound() handler for custom entrypoints, and receive warnings when font configurations exceed their hosting provider's capabilities. The update also raises the minimum supported Node.js version to 22.22.0, aligning with Astro's support policy and compatibility with StackBlitz. Notably, two experimental features warrant attention: experimental.parallelPrerender enables rendering across multiple Node.js worker threads (breaking free from single-core limitations), and a custom redirect page option for static builds offers more flexibility in routing.

For teams looking to upgrade, the recommended path is the automated @astrojs/upgrade CLI tool, though manual package manager commands remain available. Given that the build timing visualization alone could save considerable debugging time, this release represents a meaningful step toward more transparent and efficient development workflows. The parallel prerendering experiment particularly signals Astro's continued investment in scaling performance for enterprise-level sites with CPU-intensive rendering requirements.
