WhatsApp introduces an advanced security mode to protect users from advanced cyberattacks
Meta has announced the rollout of Strict Account Settings on WhatsApp, a new lockdown-style feature designed to protect accounts against highly sophisticated cyberattacks. This addition aims to improve security by allowing users to activate extra protections with only a few taps.
With Strict Account Settings enabled, WhatsApp will automatically lock the account to its most restrictive state. The app will block attachments and media from unknown senders, silence calls from people not in your contacts, and apply additional restrictions that may limit how the app functions. These changes help safeguard users in scenarios where there is heightened risk, particularly when attackers are using advanced social engineering tactics.
You can activate Strict Account Settings by navigating to WhatsApp’s settings, opening Privacy, and selecting the Advanced section. While these protections can limit some conveniences, they are especially recommended for users who face increased threats, such as journalists or public figures. The rollout of this feature will begin in the coming weeks.
