OpenAI and Google launch ChatGPT Translate & TranslateGemma for AI-powered translations
OpenAI has launched ChatGPT Translate, offering web-based translation for over 50 languages. Positioned as a competitor to Google Translate and DeepL, ChatGPT Translate uses artificial intelligence to adapt translations to various tones and contexts. This approach aims to provide users with more tailored outputs than traditional translation platforms. However, ChatGPT Translate currently only supports text input, lacking voice, image, document, or website translation found in competing services. While the platform is accessible as a web service, it does not yet have mobile applications, making it less versatile than Google Translate, which is available both online and through dedicated apps.
In parallel, Google has announced TranslateGemma, a new suite of open-source translation models based on its Gemma 3 architecture. TranslateGemma is available in three model sizes, 4 billion, 12 billion, and 27 billion parameters, catering to devices from smartphones to cloud infrastructure. Google positions these models as an open, developer-friendly alternative to proprietary machine translation systems. TranslateGemma currently supports communication across 55 languages, further expanding Google's multilingual tools alongside its main Translate platform.
