Elon Musk has announced he will open source X's new algorithm in a few days

Elon Musk has announced that his social media platform 𝕏 will release its algorithm as open source next Saturday, including all code responsible for recommending both organic and advertising posts to users. This decision represents a major policy change for the company, allowing external developers to examine and understand exactly how recommendations are made on 𝕏.

The company plans to make these releases recurring, publishing all algorithm updates and related code every four weeks. Each update will include comprehensive developer notes designed to clarify changes for those reviewing the code. By combining open source access with regular documentation, 𝕏 aims to give developers and users clearer insights into how their feeds are curated.

While 𝕏 presents this initiative as a move toward greater transparency for the platform, the timing follows ongoing criticism related to Grok's recent involvement in generating deepfake nudes. This context has led some to question whether transparency is the sole motivation for the shift. User reactions on social media have nevertheless been largely positive, with many expressing support for increased openness around 𝕏’s content algorithms.

They started the open sourcing in 2023 (https://blog.x.com/en_us/topics/company/2023/a-new-era-of-transparency-for-twitter) when the free API was shut down.

A rare case where I question the implications of going open source. This has pros and cons. On one hand you'd know how the algorithm works, on the other hand this will make it easier for governments and various bad actors to better exploit the algorithm to push their agendas.

PR Move, he's in deep water due to the little CSAM material his robot made!

There's also no way that whatever he releases is the actual, line for line, up-to-date algorithm. Or it includes something that pulls a bunch of params from somewhere else that nobody has access to.
