WhatsApp finally adds message translation in 19 languages for Android and iPhone users
WhatsApp is launching in-chat message translation, enabling users to communicate more effectively across languages in one-on-one chats, groups, and channels. To translate any message, users can now long-press the text and tap the “Translate” option. This feature allows selection of both source and target languages, and messages can be saved for future translation use.
Building on this, Android users will see an added option to automatically translate all incoming messages within a chosen chat thread. This streamlines conversations for those involved in multilingual exchanges. Translation on WhatsApp occurs directly on the user's device for both platforms, which means that WhatsApp cannot access any message content, preserving chat privacy.
While WhatsApp begins a gradual rollout today, initial support on Android covers six languages: English, Spanish, Hindi, Portuguese, Russian, and Arabic. For iPhone users, the translation feature launches with compatibility for over 19 languages, reflecting a broader starting selection. More languages are expected to be added in the coming months.
Comments
Translations are done offline using Translate API on iOS, and Google ML Kit on Android (models need to be downloaded manually from WhatsApp). So theses messages privacy relies of iOS/Android security. Of course, the WhatsApp app gets access to theses messages, but at least, they aren't translated by its servers.
