Quote posts will arrive on Mastodon in the coming weeks, with a focus on author safety
Mastodon has announced it will roll out quote posts in the coming weeks to expand user interaction while maintaining a focus on author safety. This major update introduces new ways for users to engage across the decentralized Fediverse platform.
With this feature, if post authors have enabled quoting, a new menu under the Boost button will provide the option to quote a post. Users can add commentary within the composer window before sharing. Quick boosting remains available through Shift+click on the Boost button or using the B hotkey for streamlined interaction.
Mastodon gives users full control over quoting permissions. Authors can globally disable quoting for all their posts or restrict quoting on specific individual posts. By default, quoting is set to Anyone, but users can adjust this to fit their comfort level. If authors become uncomfortable with a specific quote, they can remove their original post at any time, which will also remove the quote.
In developing this feature, Mastodon’s team prioritized community values by designing quote posts with attention to safety and mental health, rather than simply boosting engagement. Looking ahead, the new quote functionality will arrive first on mastodon.online and mastodon.social, followed by a broader rollout with Mastodon 4.5.
