Parents can now enable safety controls in ChatGPT to help protect their teens
OpenAI has introduced new parental controls and a dedicated parent resource page for ChatGPT, designed to help families manage how the chatbot is used at home. This rollout gives parents the ability to link their own ChatGPT account with their teen’s account and customize a range of safety settings, aiming for a more secure, age-appropriate experience.
Once parental controls are enabled, the teen’s ChatGPT account will automatically receive broader content protections. These include limits on access to graphic content, viral challenges, romantic or violent roleplay, and depictions of extreme beauty ideals, all to support safer online interactions for younger users.
To establish these controls, parents can send an invitation to their teen to connect accounts, or teens can also invite a parent. If the teen disconnects their account, the parent will receive a notification. Settings are managed from a streamlined control page within the parent’s ChatGPT account.
In addition, OpenAI is developing an age prediction system to help detect users under 18 and enable safeguards automatically. These changes align with OpenAI’s broader goal to make ChatGPT accessible and helpful for families, while providing tools to guide responsible use among teens.

LLM's can certainly output unpredictable content but I feel like the worst it can say is nowhere near as bad as what other kids say to each other in a call of duty xbox lobby anyways.
Can't they just create a new free account if they desire to bypass parental controls?
Guess so, yes… Or use a burner phone to log in and then use the web version… I guess it's a first step from OpenAI, but it's far from perfect.
