Opera GX launches new open-source Smart Home tool for device control & custom automations
Opera GX has launched Opera GX Smart Home, an open source project that directly connects the browser to smart home devices. This update turn Opera GX into an interactive part of the room, letting users control lights, blinds, and speakers from the browser, while smart devices can also trigger browser actions.
The update introduces automations like activating the Panic Button when a door sensor detects entry, syncing RGB lighting with browser themes, and dimming lights or muting speakers during movie playback. Users can also create custom setups, such as turning on a red “do not disturb” light when CPU usage is high.
These integrations are built on the MQTT protocol, ensuring compatibility with hubs including Home Assistant, Node-RED, and Homebridge. Opera has made the system open source and invites the community to extend it with new automations. Setup involves enabling MQTT support in early bird settings, entering broker details, and installing the Smart Home extension from GitHub.

Just opening a new tab and muting all sounds (aka "Panic Button") based on movement detection or door opening seems to be enough to justify developing this whole complex functionality. For other uses, it's part of the nerd territory.
