Mozilla extends Firefox support for Windows 7/8 once again and ends 32-bit Linux builds

Mozilla has announced a significant extension of Firefox ESR 115 security updates for users on Windows 7, Windows 8, and Windows 8.1. Previously, support was scheduled to end in September 2024, but it will now continue until March 2026. This move allows users of these legacy Windows operating systems to safely use Firefox for an extended period despite official end-of-life status from Microsoft. The same extension also applies to users running macOS versions 10.12 through 10.14, who will receive critical updates on Firefox ESR 115 until March 2026.

In a related move targeting Linux, Mozilla will discontinue support for 32-bit Linux systems with the release of Firefox 145, as the majority of Linux distributions no longer maintain 32-bit compatibility. While Firefox 145 will not be available for 32-bit Linux, users who are unable to immediately upgrade can continue using Firefox ESR 140 on their systems. ESR 140, including its 32-bit builds, will receive security updates until at least September 2026. Mozilla is encouraging all users still on 32-bit Linux platforms to transition to 64-bit systems and move to the corresponding 64-bit version of Firefox for continued access to new features and security fixes.

Nice try pulling a Microsoft there. These planned obsolescences attempt to e-waste i386 PCs and encourage overconsumerism by buying AMD64 PCs as warned by KDE Plasma icon KDE Plasma.

Apparently there is a pattern of abusing warnings as guides: Collective Shout fulfilling Shimoneta, now GAFAM is using ShinRa on how to wreck the planet.
