Photo & video management platform Immich 1.140 adds background sync, read-only mode & more

Immich 1.140 is now available, delivering new features to users of this open source, self-hosted photo and video management platform. The update introduces a background sync feature in the beta timeline, which automatically detects new media and places it in an upload queue managed by the operating system. Local and remote data synchronization now occurs periodically in the background, ensuring that newly taken photos and videos appear immediately on the timeline upon app launch.

Following these workflow improvements, a read-only mode has been added to help prevent accidental deletions or edits — useful for parents or anyone sharing devices with others. This mode is activated by double-tapping the profile picture, hiding all action buttons, so assets can only be viewed.

For users who value precise organization, this release makes it possible to find and edit missing location data associated with a specific date. In addition to these main features, Immich 1.140 contains further enhancements and bug fixes targeting stability and performance.
